INFO   •  In my senior year of art school, the chair and assistant chair of the design program asked me to design the yearly Level Three Exhibition for graphic design students. We were on a very tight schedule, so they entrusted me with complete creative control. The only requirement was to create a poster to post on the design Instagram, but the project eventually became a series of three posters and the design of the whole exhibition. I designed an L3R lettermark, 17 icons, and many vinyl decals for the exhibition, as well as writing copy for the exhibit's description.
My design system revolved around these 17 icons I designed: My concept was to create a single, bespoke icon that represented each designer in the exhibition. This also would prove very effective for the design of the exhibit, as we could use each symbol printed on vinyl to demarcate which piece belonged to which artist since the chair opted against using exhibit labels.
I wanted the icons and wordmark to speak to my design language, feel both playful, but also look contemporary and apposite for a design school exhibit. I chose bright colors that felt both fun and modern, and also attention-grabbing.
Originally the project was going to end with the three square posters, but the assistant chair liked my design so much that she helped me cut out vinyl for the exhibition and utilize my idea of the icons as exhibition markers. Using a cricut machine and a vinyl cutter, we cut out all of the signage and weeded it by hand.
